Elsenham station links you to London Liverpool Street in under an hour, making this a surprisingly accessible slice of old Essex.

The positioning's ideal - close enough to Bishop's Stortford for proper shopping and dining, yet far enough into the countryside to feel like a proper escape. Hangman's Wood and the various hills around Dunton and Cox offer decent rambling, while the network of bridleways suits cyclists and horse riders.

This isn't dramatic landscape - no sweeping vistas or dramatic coastline - but there's something quietly satisfying about these gentle Essex contours and ancient field patterns.
