Raven Armoury

The Raven Armoury sits just outside Dunmow and is genuinely worth a detour if you're into metalwork or decorative crafts. It's a working studio and gallery where you can see artisans making and displaying their pieces - everything from ornamental ironwork to bespoke commissions. The building itself has character, and watching the craftspeople at work is far more engaging than standing in front of finished pieces behind velvet rope.

You'll spend anything from 45 minutes to a couple of hours here depending on how chatty the makers are feeling and whether you're tempted by the shop. Families with older kids might find it interesting, particularly if they've done any metalwork at school. Younger children could get restless unless they're the type who like watching things being made. History and craft enthusiasts will absolutely get more from it than casual browsers.

It's perfectly positioned as a mid-morning or afternoon stop if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Dairymeade Farm Glamping or Hill Farm campsite - breaks up a park-based holiday nicely without adding hours to your day. The surrounding countryside around Dunmow is pleasant for a walk afterwards, so you could easily string together a decent half-day.
