Dow Wood

Dow Wood is proper Essex woodland - the kind of place that feels a world away from the market town of Dunmow despite being practically on its doorstep. Ancient trees, decent paths, and enough green to clear your head in an afternoon. What you get here is straightforward: woodland walks through mixed forest, some open glades, and if you're lucky, you'll spot deer. The canopy's thick enough that even on hot days it stays cool and shaded.

Walkers will have the most fun here. It's not a destination that demands hours of your time - more like a two-hour potter if you're taking it slowly - but that actually makes it ideal as a half-day jaunt when you're based at one of the local farms. Dairymeade Farm Glamping is barely three miles away, so it works brilliantly as a morning or late-afternoon walk when temperatures drop. Hill Farm and Hidden Gem are similarly close.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first loop, though the woodland wildlife does hold attention. Older children who enjoy orienteering or nature spotting will get more out of it. Dog walkers clearly love the place - you'll see plenty of them on weekends.

The woodland is free to access, and there's no set opening hours - it's a proper public forest. Wear proper boots if it's been wet; the paths can get muddy fast. Spring's the best time, when the bluebells come through. Don't expect dramatic views or facilities, but do expect peace and decent air.
