The town centre proper buzzes with independent shops and proper cafés, though it quietens down considerably by Wednesday afternoon. Head out towards the coast and you'll hit Mersea Island, connected by a causeway that floods at high tide. The island feels properly remote despite being just 20 minutes from town. Mersea Beach stretches for miles, backed by those iconic beach huts that photographers love. Monkey Beach offers a quieter alternative when the main strand gets busy.

Countryside fans should make time for RSPB Old Hall Marshes, where the bird watching is genuinely exceptional. The reserve sprawls across reclaimed farmland, with hides overlooking mudflats that teem with waders and wildfowl. Less obvious but equally rewarding is Abbots Hall Farm, where traditional Essex agriculture meets conservation work.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A12 drops you practically at Colchester's doorstep, and the train from London takes just over an hour. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough for quick town visits but positioned to explore the coast and marshland that defines this corner of Essex. The contrast between Roman history and wild saltmarsh creates an unexpectedly compelling combination.
