Wellhouse Reservoirs

Two modest reservoirs sitting quietly in the Essex countryside, Wellhouse Reservoirs won't set your world alight but they're proper peaceful if you need a gentle walk. I found them on a drizzly Tuesday morning near Colchester, and frankly, that suited the mood perfectly - grey water reflecting grey skies, with just the odd angler for company.

Walkers will get the most from this spot. There's a decent path around both reservoirs that takes about an hour at a leisurely pace, maybe less if you're pushing on. The larger of the two has better views across the water, though don't expect dramatic vistas - this is Essex flatland at its most understated.

Families staying at nearby holiday parks like West Mersea or Waldegraves might find it a useful spot for burning off energy, though younger children could get restless after half an hour. The real appeal is the quiet - you're unlikely to encounter crowds here, even on weekends.

Bird watchers bring binoculars for a reason. I spotted several species of waterfowl, including some decent-sized grebes. Access appears to be free, though parking is limited to roadside spots. It's hardly a destination in itself, but if you're based at one of the Mersea Island holiday parks and fancy a change from the coast, it's a pleasant enough diversion.
