New Quay

Dolphins breach just metres from the harbour wall here, turning a simple stroll into an unexpected wildlife encounter. This working fishing village on Cardigan Bay has kept its authentic character despite being one of West Wales' most reliable spots for marine life watching. The colourful houses tumble down the hillside to meet a proper working quay where crab boats still land their catch.

New Quay's coastline is absolutely cracking. Cwmtydu Beach lies a short drive south - a proper hidden cove backed by dramatic cliffs and accessible via a steep footpath. The more accessible Traeth Soden offers golden sand and rock pools, whilst Traeth y Coubal provides a quieter alternative when the main beaches get busy during school holidays.

Inland, Allt Llwynwernod offers lovely woodland walks with glimpses of Cardigan Bay through the trees. History buffs should seek out Castell Bach, an Iron Age hillfort with commanding views over the coastline. St Tysilio Church, perched on the headland, makes for a peaceful stop with its ancient graveyard overlooking the sea.

Getting here means following the A487 coast road from Aberaeron (8 miles north) or Cardigan (12 miles south). The narrow streets can get congested in summer, particularly around the harbour area.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Haven Quay West Holiday Park or Ocean Heights Leisure Park puts you within walking distance of dolphin-watching boat trips while providing easy access to those brilliant secluded beaches. The combination of marine wildlife, coastal walks, and that authentic fishing village atmosphere makes this stretch of Ceredigion coast genuinely special.
