Castell Bach

Stone foundations barely visible through the grass mark what locals know as Castell Bach - literally 'little castle' in Welsh. This Iron Age hillfort sits on a modest rise overlooking the coast near New Quay, though you'll need to look hard to spot much beyond earthwork banks and the odd tumbled stone. What remains suggests a small defended settlement, probably occupied sometime between 500 BC and the Roman conquest.

Walking the perimeter takes about ten minutes, and frankly that's enough for most visitors. History enthusiasts might linger longer, trying to make sense of the layout, but kids will be restless within minutes. The real draw here isn't the archaeology - it's the views across Cardigan Bay and the surprisingly peaceful spot for a picnic.

Getting there involves a bit of detective work as signage is minimal. Park in New Quay and follow the coastal path north for about twenty minutes, then cut inland when you spot the low hill. It's free to explore, naturally, being little more than a field with ancient bumps.
