Cwmtydu Beach

Rocky outcrops frame this small shingle cove that feels properly remote despite being just a short drive from New Quay. Getting down requires a fairly steep walk along the coast path, but the effort pays off with a beach that rarely gets crowded even in peak summer. The pebbles make it less than ideal for lounging, but rock poolers and families with older children will find plenty to explore among the weathered limestone formations.

Dolphins often appear in the waters off this stretch of coast - I spotted a pod during my last visit in early evening when the light was particularly lovely. The beach faces roughly southwest, so sunset views can be spectacular on clear days.

Expect to spend an hour or two here rather than a full day. There are no facilities whatsoever, so bring everything you need including drinking water. The walk back up can be a proper slog with tired children in tow.

Staying at one of the holiday parks around New Quay makes this an easy addition to a Cardigan Bay coastal tour. Ocean Heights and The Village Holiday Park are both within a couple of miles, making Cwmtydu a good option when you want to escape the busier beaches closer to town. Just don't expect golden sand or easy access.
