Lampeter

Students with rucksacks and worn-out trainers give this small university town its pulse. Lampeter might be Wales rather than England despite what the postcode suggests, but it feels properly remote tucked into the Teifi Valley's rolling hills. The presence of University of Wales Trinity Saint David keeps things lively during term time, though summer sees a quieter pace settle over the Georgian streets.

Climbing Trichrug or Banc Y Carnau rewards you with cracking views across Ceredigion's green countryside. The peaks aren't challenging, but they're well worth the effort for the panoramas. Down in the valley, Mid Wales Wildlife Sanctuary makes for a decent family outing, especially if the weather turns.

History buffs should seek out the remains of Dinerth Castle, though there's not much left to see these days. More atmospheric is Capel Pennant, a lovely old chapel that captures something of rural Wales' spiritual heritage. The surrounding Allt Tŷ Mawr forest offers proper walking territory when you need to stretch your legs.

Getting here takes a bit of planning. The A482 winds through some spectacular countryside from Builth Wells, though it's not the quickest route. Aberystwyth is your nearest proper town, about 30 minutes north along the A485. The drive alone justifies the journey - classic Welsh hill country at its finest.

Staying at one of the local parks makes perfect sense for exploring this corner of mid Wales. You're well placed for day trips to the coast at New Quay, yet far enough inland to feel properly away from it all. Term time brings energy to the pubs and cafés, but the landscape remains the real draw.
