Trichrug

Standing at 677 metres, this rounded summit offers proper views across the Teifi Valley without the crowds you'll find on Snowdonia's peaks. The walk up from the minor roads south of Lampeter takes about an hour through sheep-grazed moorland and patches of forestry - nothing too technical, but you'll want decent boots as it gets boggy after rain.

Families with older children will manage the ascent fine, though toddlers might struggle with the rough ground. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and trig point, with views stretching west toward Cardigan Bay on clear days. You can make out the distinctive outline of the Preseli Hills to the south.

What makes Trichrug worth the effort is the sense of space - this is proper hill country without the tourist infrastructure. No cafe at the top, no signposted paths, just you and the landscape. Allow three hours for the round trip if you're taking it steady.

The peak works well as a morning walk if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Lampeter - FfosHelyg Caravan Park and Hafod Brynog Caravan Site are both within easy driving distance. After a morning on the hill, Lampeter itself has decent pubs for lunch and the coast at Aberaeron is only twenty minutes away for an afternoon by the sea.
