Castell Trefilan

Stone foundations and earthwork remains mark where a Norman castle once commanded views across the Teifi Valley, just outside Lampeter. Castell Trefilan sits on a natural mound that gives proper perspective on how medieval lords chose their defensive positions - you can see for miles in every direction from up here.

What's left isn't much to look at honestly. A few low walls, some grassy bumps where buildings once stood, and that's about it. But for anyone with a bit of imagination, it's easy enough to picture how this place would have dominated the landscape 800 years ago. The walk up from the road takes about ten minutes and gives you a decent bit of exercise.

Families might find it a bit disappointing unless the kids are properly into castle stories. History enthusiasts will get more from it, especially if they've done a bit of reading beforehand about Norman conquest in Wales. The views alone make it worth the short detour if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Lampeter - Hafod Brynog Caravan Site is barely a mile and a half away.

Best combined with a trip into Lampeter itself rather than making a special journey. No entrance fee as far as I could tell, and you can visit any time since it's just open countryside. Allow about half an hour unless you're planning a longer countryside walk.
