Allt Pen-cnwc

Dense woodland stretches across rolling hills just outside Lampeter, where ancient oaks and beech trees create a proper canopy walk. Allt Pen-cnwc isn't signposted like your typical tourist forest - you'll need to ask locals or rely on OS maps to find the right footpaths threading through this corner of Ceredigion.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of orienteering will love the adventure of it all. The younger ones might find the lack of marked trails frustrating, but seasoned walkers and nature lovers will appreciate having the place largely to themselves. Bird watchers do particularly well here - the mixed woodland attracts everything from nuthatches to the occasional red kite overhead.

Allow at least two hours if you're planning a proper explore, though you could easily spend half a day if the weather's kind. Spring brings bluebells carpeting the forest floor, while autumn turns the canopy into a cracking display of gold and copper. Winter walking requires proper boots as the paths can get muddy.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Hafod Brynog or Treberfedd Farm puts you within easy reach for an early morning wander before the day trippers arrive. The forest works well as a peaceful counterpoint to busier attractions around Lampeter, though don't expect facilities or clear waymarking.
