Allt Tŷ Mawr

Deep woodland walks wind through this lovely forest area just outside Lampeter, where ancient oak and beech trees create a proper canopy overhead. The Welsh name translates roughly to 'big house stream', hinting at the estate origins of these mature woodlands. Families will find it brilliant for letting children run wild among the trees - though keep younger ones close as there's no formal path marking.

Walkers get the best of it here, with several informal trails leading through different sections of the forest. The terrain varies from gentle slopes perfect for afternoon strolls to steeper sections that'll get the heart pumping. Dog owners particularly love it since there's space to let pets off the lead safely away from roads.

Being unmanaged woodland, access is free and you can visit any time, though autumn brings the most spectacular colours. Allow at least two hours if you want to explore properly. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments is essential.

Location-wise, it works well with a stay at any of the nearby caravan parks like FfosHelyg or Hafod Brynog, both within walking distance. Lampeter itself offers proper cafes and shops for supplies, making this forest a good addition to a longer Ceredigion holiday rather than a destination in itself.
