Leyburn

From its perch high above Wensleydale, Leyburn commands some of the finest views in the Yorkshire Dales. This proper market town has retained its working character - Friday market days still draw farmers from across the dale, and you'll hear more Yorkshire accents than tourist chatter.

Mill Gill Force makes for a lovely afternoon walk, though the real treat is climbing Addlebrough for those sweeping views across to the Lake District fells on clear days. The Yorkshire Dales Brewery sits right in town, perfect for sampling their ales after a day tramping the hills. Those with energy to burn should tackle Whitfield Fell or The Fleak - both offer cracking walks without the crowds you'll find around more famous peaks.

Wensleydale stretches out below like a green carpet, dotted with dry stone walls and the odd red squirrel if you're lucky. The ancient Bainbridge Hillfort reminds you this landscape has been worked for millennia, while Summer Lodge Tarn provides a peaceful spot for reflection after the hills have taken their toll.

It's about 12 miles from Hawes and well connected by the regular bus service that runs through the dale. Leyburn sits perfectly positioned for exploring both upper and lower Wensleydale without the daily commute that staying in busier spots like Grassington demands.

Staying at one of the nearby campsites or glamping pods puts you right in the heart of walking country. You can be on the fells within minutes of leaving your pitch, and after a proper day out, there's nothing better than returning to base with muddy boots and tired legs.
