The Fleak

The Fleak rises 671 metres above the Wensleydale Valley, commanding proper views across North Yorkshire's rolling moorland. It's a straightforward fell walk from Leyburn - nothing technical, but the ascent is relentless enough that you'll feel you've earned your sandwiches at the top.

What you get is moorland walking at its best. The summit itself is modest - no dramatic cairn, just open plateau with visibility that stretches for miles on clear days. On a decent afternoon, you can pick out the Pennines rolling away southward. The real pleasure is the walk itself rather than any facilities at the top. There aren't any.

This suits keen walkers more than casual strollers. Families with younger legs might find it a slog, and there's not much to occupy kids once they've reached the viewpoint. Allow three hours if you're taking it steady. Best visited in autumn when the moorland's golden and the air's crisp - summer brings midges in numbers that'll test your patience.

Staying at one of the nearby campsites - Cherish Glamping or Usha Gap Farm lie closest - gives you easy access for an early start. The walk doesn't demand anything fancy, just decent boots and a weather eye on the forecast.
