Bainbridge Hillfort (Late Bronze Age, Early Iron Age)

The earthworks on Bainbridge Moor are what's left of a proper Iron Age settlement, sitting about 300 metres up on the moorland just outside Leyburn. You're looking at defensive banks and ditches that would have enclosed a community over 2,500 years ago - the sort of place that's deeply atmospheric if you're into that sort of archaeology, less thrilling if you're expecting dramatic ruins.

Walking up here, you get a sense of why they chose it: commanding views across Wensleydale, space to defend, moorland that still feels remote. The hillfort itself covers a fair bit of ground, so you're not done in twenty minutes. Bring proper footwear and check the weather - it can get bleak up there fast.

Historie types and serious walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile. Children might struggle unless they're the sort to engage with invisible ancient structures and big views. The site is open access (it's common land), which means free and available whenever you fancy it, though there's no interpretation on site, so do a bit of reading beforehand to get the most from it.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Stablefell or Hawes are your closest options - this works brilliantly as a morning walk before heading down into Leyburn or Hawes itself. It's the kind of detour that rewards curiosity rather than lazy tourism.
