Mill Gill Force

The waterfall drops hard and fast down a narrow ravine, proper impressive after rain when the moorland runoff kicks in. Mill Gill Force sits just outside Leyburn in Wensleydale, accessible via a short walk through farmland that takes maybe twenty minutes from the road. It's the kind of spot that rewards a detour if you're already exploring the dale - not a destination in itself, but brilliant if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Stablefell or Usha Gap Farm.

The gill itself is a genuine Yorkshire fell stream, and the force (that's waterfall to you) cuts through exposed rock with real energy. On a grey day with water volume, it's genuinely dramatic. Summer visits can be underwhelming - you might get a trickle - so timing matters. The walk in is straightforward enough for families with older kids, though the track gets muddy and there's no proper path once you're near the water itself.

Allow an hour including the walk, longer if you fancy sitting on the rocks and watching it. Free to visit, as with most fell walks in this part of the world. It works well as part of a bigger Wensleydale loop rather than a standalone trip. If you're based at Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just three miles away, it's an easy morning outing before hitting Hardraw Force or Pen-y-ghent. Worth doing, but don't expect the spectacle of bigger Yorkshire cataracts.
