Woodhall Greets

The walk up to Woodhall Greets rewards you with proper views across Wensleydale. It's a modest peak by Lake District standards, but that's rather the point - you get the drama without the crowds that plague bigger fells. The summit opens out onto a landscape of stone walls and rolling farmland that stretches toward Leyburn in the valley below.

Getting there from the nearby caravan parks around Hawes and Stablefell takes about an hour's walk, depending on which route you choose. The approaches aren't dramatically steep, which means families with older kids and reasonably fit walkers will manage it without too much fuss. Expect to spend two to three hours on the whole outing if you're not hurrying. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper boots matter.

This is walker's country rather than a honeypot attraction. There's no café at the top, no visitor centre, no admission charge - just the hill itself and what you make of the experience. History buffs might appreciate that you're walking through some of the most worked agricultural landscape in northern England, where the same families have farmed the same fields for centuries. The views justify the climb, and on a clear day you can see well beyond Wensleydale. If you're camping nearby, it's an excellent half-day expedition that beats driving to somewhere more famous. Worth the walk, then. Go early to claim some solitude.
