Ellerkin

Ellerkin is a modest fell top in Wensleydale, just beyond Leyburn, that rewards a straightforward walk with proper views across the Yorkshire Dales. Nothing fancy, just open moorland and the sense that you've actually climbed somewhere. The summit itself is unremarkable - there's no trig point, no café, no Instagram queue - but the walk up takes you through genuine fell country, and on a clear day you can see right across to Pen-y-ghent and beyond.

This is a peak for walkers who actually want to walk, not dawdle. Allow two hours for a decent circuit from the valley floor, maybe less if you're fit. Families with older children will enjoy it; younger ones might find it a bit relentless. The terrain is grassland mostly, so boots matter when it's wet - and in Yorkshire, it often is. There's no entrance fee or facilities at the top, so bring water and a decent map. Go mid-week if you can; weekends bring a trickle of peak-baggers.

If you're based at Usha Gap Farm or Cherish Glamping - both within five miles - Ellerkin sits nicely alongside Leyburn's quieter walks and the broader Wensleydale circuit. It's not a destination in itself, but rather a good morning's graft that fits neatly into a proper fell-walking holiday. Worth doing if you're in the area; don't detour specially.
