The promenade stretches for two miles along this stretch of Fife coast, where families come to fly kites and dog walkers brave the wind off the Forth. Leven's long beach is the town's main draw - a proper sandy stretch that feels more spacious than some of Scotland's more famous coastal spots. The resort town peaked in Victorian times, and while it's quieter now, there's still something appealingly unpretentious about the place.

Silverburn Park sits right behind the seafront, offering woodland walks and bird watching just minutes from the waves. The park connects to longer trails through Pilmuir Wood if you fancy a proper ramble. Golf enthusiasts will know Lundin Golf Club, where the links course runs right alongside Lundin links beach - one of those courses where a slice might land on the sand.

History buffs should seek out the Standing Stones of Lundin, an ancient stone circle that's survived remarkably well considering its age. Less ancient but equally fascinating is the Parachute Tower Base of 1st Independent Polish Parachute Brigade, commemorating the Polish forces who trained here during World War Two.

Carlhurlie Reservoir provides a change of scenery inland - good for a quiet walk when the coast gets too blustery. The whole area feels authentically Scottish rather than touristy, which is part of its appeal.

Kirkcaldy lies just eight miles north, connected by regular bus services, while Edinburgh's about 45 minutes by car. Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you within easy reach of both Leven's beach and the wider East Neuk fishing villages - St Andrews is only 20 minutes up the coast.
