Leven

The prom stretches for nearly two miles along this Fife coastal town, making it one of Scotland's longest seafronts. Leven sits right on the Forth estuary with proper sandy beaches that locals have been enjoying since Victorian times, when the railway first brought day-trippers from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Largo Law dominates the skyline inland - at 290 metres, this extinct volcano offers cracking views across the Forth to Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills on clear days. It's a decent climb but well worth the effort. Down on the flatter ground, you'll find the Vicenzo Lunardi Stone marking where the famous balloonist made Scotland's first manned balloon flight back in 1785.

Balcormo Wood provides a lovely contrast to the coastal scenery, with well-marked paths winding through mixed woodland that's particularly stunning in autumn. The more adventurous can tackle Gils Law, another ancient peak that rewards walkers with panoramic views across Fife's rolling farmland.

Archaeology buffs shouldn't miss Norrie's Law cairn, a Bronze Age burial site that yielded one of Scotland's most significant Pictish silver hoards when excavated in the 19th century. The town itself has a proper working feel - this isn't a tourist trap but a genuine community with decent pubs and local shops.

Getting here is straightforward enough. Leven sits on the main A915 coastal route through Fife, about 30 miles northeast of Edinburgh. The nearest rail connection is Markinch, roughly 8 miles inland, with regular buses linking the two. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring this stretch of coast - you're within easy reach of St Andrews to the north and the historic burghs of the East Neuk without the premium prices those places command.
