Scrambling up through gorse and bracken, this modest Fife hill rewards with proper views across the Forth to Edinburgh on clear days. Gils Law won't trouble serious hillwalkers - it's barely 200 metres above sea level - but for families staying near Leven, it makes a decent afternoon stretch of the legs.

The summit feels surprisingly wild given you're just inland from the coast. Kids will enjoy the scramble through the heather, though watch for rabbit holes on the way up. From the top, the vista takes in the Forth bridges and, on exceptionally clear days, the Pentlands beyond Edinburgh. Worth the climb? Absolutely, especially if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Woodland Gardens or Leven Beach Holiday Park.

Allow an hour return from the car, longer if you're bringing little ones. The path isn't marked but it's obvious enough - head uphill and you'll get there. Best avoided in high winds when the exposed summit can be properly bracing. No facilities up there, naturally, so bring water and perhaps a flask if it's chilly.
