Ancient mills once powered by the River Churnet give this Staffordshire market town its industrial soul. Leek sits right on the edge of the Peak District, making it feel more like a proper hillside settlement than your typical market town. The cobbled streets slope down towards the valley, and you can smell the moorland air even in the town centre.

Climbing Lowe Hill gives you the full picture - rolling farmland stretches south while the dark peaks of the Pennines loom north. It's a proper workout but worth every step. Down in town, the Victorian architecture tells the story of Leek's silk-weaving heyday, though these days it's more about outdoor gear shops and cafés serving walkers.

The surrounding landscape is absolutely cracking. The Mount and The Waste nature reserves offer quieter walking than the busy Peak District trails, while Birches Gardens provides a gentler stroll for families. You're twenty minutes from Alton Towers if the weather turns, but honestly, the moors are far more rewarding.

Getting here means the A53 from either Stoke-on-Trent or Buxton - both about half an hour away. The nearest train station is actually at Stoke, so having your own transport helps enormously. Staying at one of the nearby parks like Rudyard Vale or Blackshaw Moor puts you perfectly positioned for both the Peak District proper and this often-overlooked corner of Staffordshire. The town itself goes quiet after 6pm, but that's exactly what you want after a day on the hills.
