The grey limestone buildings stretch along the River Kent valley, proper Cumbrian architecture that's weathered centuries without losing its edge. Kendal sits at the perfect spot for fell walkers. Lord's Seat and Whitbarrow offer cracking views without the crowds that plague the central lakes.
