Whitbarrow

The limestone ridge of Whitbarrow rises abruptly from the flat valleys south of Kendal, looking far more dramatic than its 784 metres really warrants. From the summit you get unobstructed views across the Kent estuary to Morecambe Bay - on a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District proper. The walk itself is straightforward rather than thrilling. Most people approach from the south near Meathop, a steep but short pull that takes about forty minutes up. The top is open grassland scattered with limestone boulders, and while there's nothing fancy up there - no café, no visitor centre, just a trig point - the views alone make the effort worthwhile.

This is proper walker territory. Families with young legs will manage it fine in a morning, and the whole thing is free - just park sensibly and get on with it. The real appeal is that it feels genuinely wild despite being only three miles from Meathop Fell Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Damson View Glamping. On a busy day in the Lake District you'll have this ridge almost to yourself. Worth doing early or late in the day when the light catches the estuary properly.

Base yourself at one of the caravan parks within spitting distance - Kendal Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is four miles away - and slot this in as a half-day excursion alongside bigger walks. Don't expect dramatic peaks or hidden valleys. What you get is solitude, straightforward hill fitness, and that rare thing: a proper fell walk that won't take all day.
