Chapel Hill

The walk up Chapel Hill from Kendal is straightforward enough, and on a clear day the views across the Kent valley absolutely justify the leg work. It's not a dramatic summit - more of a steady climb through farmland - but you get proper panoramic stuff once you're up there: the Lakeland fells spreading out to the north, the southern valleys dropping away behind you.

The peak itself is modest, topped with a trig point and enough flat ground to sit down with a sandwich. Most people can manage it in under two hours return from Kendal town centre, which makes it ideal if you're based at one of the glamping sites nearby like Damson View or Lakeland Glamping - close enough for a morning outing without committing your whole day. It's free, obviously, being a hill.

Honestly though, Chapel Hill works best as part of a wider walk rather than a destination in itself. Solo walkers and couples will find it perfectly pleasant. Families with young kids might find the climb a bit of a slog for what's essentially a view - no facilities at the top, no drama to keep them entertained. If you're camping at Windermere or Newby Bridge, you'd be better off tackling something with more character in the central fells.

Timing-wise, go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday glare washing out the view. Winter's actually decent too - fewer people, crisper air.
