Holyhead

Ferry horns echo across the harbour as travellers prepare for the crossing to Dublin. This is Britain's westernmost point, where the Irish Sea crashes against rugged cliffs and the pace slows to island time. Holyhead feels more Irish than Welsh sometimes - hardly surprising given it's closer to Dublin than Cardiff.

The town wraps around one of Wales' finest natural harbours. Holy Island's dramatic coastline rewards those who venture beyond the port, with clifftop walks offering proper views across to Ireland on clear days. Llyn Traffwll provides a tranquil contrast, this peaceful lake perfect for a gentle stroll when the coastal winds pick up.

Don't expect touristy frills here. Holyhead is a working town first, tourist destination second. The old church of San Mihangel sits quietly away from the ferry chaos, while The Prince of Wales Gymnasium keeps the locals fit. It's authentic Wales, rough around the edges but genuine.

Getting here means crossing the Menai Strait from the mainland - the A55 runs straight to the ferry terminal. Most folk rush through en route to Ireland, but staying put for a night or two reveals Anglesey's wilder side. The island's beaches and prehistoric sites lie within easy striking distance.

Camping nearby makes perfect sense if you're exploring Anglesey properly. Several parks dot the coastline, from basic pitches to glamping pods. You'll wake to seabirds rather than traffic, with empty beaches and coastal paths right on your doorstep. Much better than rushing the ferry crossing.
