Llyn Traffwll

Just off the main road between Holyhead and Valley, this small lake barely registers on most tourist maps - which is rather the point. Llyn Traffwll offers a proper bit of Welsh tranquillity without the crowds that descend on Anglesey's better-known spots.

The lake itself is nothing spectacular - a modest stretch of water surrounded by rolling farmland and patches of woodland. But that's exactly why it works. Families staying at nearby sites like Mulberry's Farm or Trewan Sands Caravan Park will find it ideal for an hour's gentle walk, particularly if the children are getting restless. The path around the perimeter is fairly level, though it can get muddy after rain.

Birdwatchers do well here - I spotted several species of duck and the occasional heron during my visit. It's also a decent spot for a picnic if you fancy somewhere quieter than the beach. The water looks inviting enough, though I wouldn't recommend swimming given the farmland runoff.

Honestly, you wouldn't travel specifically to see Llyn Traffwll, but it's a lovely little detour if you're exploring this corner of Anglesey. Perfect for stretching your legs between visits to Holyhead's maritime attractions or the coastal paths. Allow about an hour for a leisurely circuit, longer if you bring a flask and settle in for some proper countryside peace.
