Hereford

The River Wye curves lazily through pastoral countryside dotted with ancient woods and weathered stone churches. This is deepest Herefordshire, where the pace slows right down and the landscape feels properly timeless. The city of Hereford lies just north, but out here you're in apple orchard and hop field territory.

Walking the riverbank near Hoarwithy reveals why the Wye has inspired poets for centuries. The water runs clear over pebbled shallows, with wooded hills rising on both sides. St. Tysilio's Church sits prettily by the water - one of several Norman gems scattered through these villages. Saint Dubricius Hentland Parish Church and St John the Baptist Parish Church each tell their own stories of rural devotion spanning nearly a millennium.

Forest walks are the real draw here though. Kynaston Rings Wood offers ancient earthworks among the beech and oak, while Harewood End Wood provides cracking views across the Wye Valley. Pengethly Grove is smaller but perfectly formed for an afternoon ramble.

Hereford city is a 20-minute drive north for cathedral visits and proper shopping. Staying at one of the local campsites or glamping spots puts you right in the heart of this peaceful countryside, with riverside walks literally on the doorstep and the Black Mountains visible on clear days to the southwest.
