Ballingham Hill

Getting to the top feels more demanding than the 1,100-foot elevation suggests - partly because there's no obvious path once you leave the minor roads around Hereford. The summit of Ballingham Hill rewards persistent walkers with sweeping views across the Wye Valley, though it's hardly a mountain experience in the Alpine sense. More a proper ramble through farmland that gradually climbs to reveal the countryside spreading out below.

Families with younger children might find the route a bit vague and tiring. Serious walkers and those who enjoy navigating country lanes will appreciate the relative quiet - you're unlikely to bump into coach parties up here. The views take in the meandering River Wye and the patchwork fields that make this corner of Herefordshire so appealing.

Allow a good half-day if you're walking from the valley, though many visitors drive partway up the hill roads before setting off on foot. Best tackled in clear weather when the views actually justify the effort. It fits well with a stay at one of the nearby camping spots like Tresseck Campsite or Lucksall Caravan & Camping Park - both within easy striking distance and perfectly placed for exploring this gentler side of the Welsh borders without the crowds that descend on the Brecon Beacons.
