Capler Camp

An Iron Age hill fort crowning a ridge above Fownhope, Capler Camp rewards the walk with proper views across the Wye Valley. It's essentially earthworks - ramparts and ditches that form concentric rings around the hilltop - but standing there, you get a real sense of why someone chose this spot two thousand years ago. The defensive positions are obvious; the sightlines across the valley even more so.

Historia buffs will spend a good hour working out the layout and imagining what life looked like from up here. Families with older kids might manage 45 minutes if the weather cooperates, though younger ones could get restless once they've clambered around the ramparts. It's not a visitor centre or a reconstruction - just the bones of the thing, which is either brilliant or a bit disappointing depending on what you're after.

Reach it via a fairly steep walk from Fownhope itself; allow an hour return trip with time to stand about. Free to visit, obviously. Go on a clear day when the views actually justify the climb. In winter, the grass gets proper muddy and the visibility vanishes.

If you're staying at one of the local glamping spots - Caplor Glamping is practically on the doorstep - this makes an easy morning before heading down to explore the Wye Valley proper. Worth combining with a riverside walk rather than treating it as a standalone trip.
