Ross-on-Wye

Standing on the red sandstone cliffs above the River Wye, this market town has watched centuries of history flow beneath its ancient bridge. Ross-on-Wye feels properly lived-in rather than touristy - locals still fill the Thursday market, and the independent shops along the narrow streets haven't been entirely swallowed by chains yet.

The view from the Prospect, the town's famous public garden, is frankly spectacular. You can see the Wye snaking through the valley, with the Welsh hills rising in the distance. It's a proper vantage point that's been drawing visitors since Victorian times, though thankfully without the crowds you'd get elsewhere.

Venture beyond the town centre and you'll find yourself in some of Herefordshire's finest walking country. Dymock Woods stretches for miles through ancient beech and oak, particularly stunning during the spring daffodil season. Queen's Wood and Linton Wood offer quieter rambles, while Gwen and Vera's Nature Reserve provides a gentler stroll for families.

For something completely different, Atbrockmoorhead offers alpaca walking experiences - oddly therapeutic and surprisingly popular with the kids. The surrounding countryside is dotted with historic sites too, including the elegant Boyce Court manor.

Getting here is straightforward enough - the A40 runs right past, and it's about 15 miles southeast of Hereford. The train station connects to Birmingham and Cardiff, though services can be a bit patchy.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to wander into town for dinner or supplies, but wake up surrounded by proper countryside. The Wye Valley walks start practically on your doorstep, and you can explore the Forest of Dean just across the river.
