Betty Daw's Wood

The woodland walk through Betty Daw's Wood, just outside Ross-on-Wye, is one of those proper local spots that never makes the tourist board brochures but absolutely should. It's a straightforward woodland trail through mixed broadleaf trees - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant if you're after a gentle hour away from the River Wye crowds. The walk itself takes about an hour depending on your pace, and the ground stays reasonably dry even after rain, which is handy.

Walkers and families will get the most from it, though don't expect dramatic views or grand vistas. It's the kind of place where kids can safely explore without you having a nervous breakdown, and where you can actually hear birdsong instead of coach parties. The wood feels properly cared for without being over-managed, which counts for something.
