Dunstable

Rolling chalk downland stretches in every direction from this market town perched on the edge of the Chiltern Hills. The landscape here is proper countryside - ancient beech woodlands threading between open fields, with footpaths that reward walkers with sweeping views across three counties.

Dunstable sits at the crossroads of two Roman roads, and you can still visit the Roman Temple site that hints at the area's deep history. The town itself is straightforward and unpretentious, with a decent high street that serves the surrounding villages well.

What really draws people here is the outdoors. Bell Wood and Ravensdell Wood offer lovely walks through mature beech and oak, while the network of ancient woodlands like Hoo Wood and Breach Wood provides miles of exploring. Each has its own character - some dense and mysterious, others open with clearings perfect for a picnic.

The Chiltern Hills AONB begins practically on Dunstable's doorstep. Walking the ridgeway paths gives you that proper downland feeling - big skies, close-cropped grass, and views that go on forever. On clear days you can see right across the Vale of Aylesbury.

Getting here is dead easy. The M1 runs just west of town, and London is barely an hour by car. Luton's the nearest major centre, but Dunstable has everything you need for a few days' exploring.

Camping nearby puts you right in the heart of this walking country. Sites like Merlin Farm and Hill Farm give you that proper countryside feel, with Whipsnade Zoo practically next door if you're travelling with children. It's an excellent base for exploring both the Chilterns and the quieter corners of Bedfordshire.
