Hoo Wood

The woodland around Hoo Wood is proper Chilterns country - dense beech trees, chalky paths that crunch underfoot, and the sort of quiet that makes you realise how little you actually hear in daily life. It's a working forest rather than a manicured attraction, which means it feels genuinely wild without being intimidating.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths wind through established woodland with decent elevation changes if you fancy a proper workout, though you can equally potter about for an hour without breaking a sweat. Families with kids who can manage uneven ground will find it engrossing enough - there's always something to spot, and the density of the trees means it never feels samey. By contrast, if you're after a quick Instagram moment, you'll be disappointed.

Being free and unrestricted, you can visit whenever suits you. Early morning is particularly good if you want to dodge other walkers and catch the light filtering through the canopy. Allow a couple of hours minimum to do it justice; rushing through wood feels like cheating.

It sits handily between Dunstable and the wider Chilterns, making it ideal for breaking up a camping trip at one of the nearby sites like Merlin Farm or Woodlands. The forest doesn't require planning ahead - no booking, no entry fee - which means you can decide to visit on the morning of, which rather suits the English countryside experience.
