Roman Temple site

The Roman Temple site east of Dunstable is a proper archaeological dig - you're walking around actual excavation trenches where centuries-old stones still sit in the ground. It's not a flashy attraction with interpretation boards and café facilities. What you get instead is the raw thing itself: the foundation walls of a temple that once stood here nearly two thousand years ago, laid bare for you to see exactly how the Romans built and what they left behind.

You'll need to be the sort of person who finds that genuinely interesting. If you're into archaeology or Roman Britain, absolutely worth the detour. Families with young kids might struggle - there's not much interactive going on, and a restless seven-year-old will get bored within twenty minutes. Walkers heading through the Chiltern Hills region will find it sits nicely alongside a countryside ramble.

Dunstable itself is the nearest proper town for supplies and a decent meal. The site works well if you're basing yourself at one of the local camping spots - Merlin Farm and Highridge Farm are both within a six-mile radius and put you in decent walking country. Check opening times before you head out, as archaeological sites can have restricted access depending on ongoing work and seasons. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested in the history, half that if you're just passing through.
