Breach Wood

Breach Wood is a proper working forest just outside Dunstable, where you can actually walk among the trees rather than gawk at them from a car park. It's managed woodland - you'll see evidence of forestry work, timber stacks, and the occasional digger - which makes it feel real rather than manicured. The paths are decent enough and wind through a mix of deciduous trees, with enough space that you won't feel hemmed in even on a decent day.

It's the sort of place that appeals to people who like a straightforward woodland walk without the visitor centre faff. Families with kids of rambling age will get on fine here; younger children might find it a bit samey after half an hour. The real attraction is the quiet - it's close enough to Dunstable that you'd expect crowds, but most people miss it entirely.

Allow two hours if you want to do a proper loop, or forty minutes if you're just after some fresh air between the caravan parks. There's something about a working forest that beats a prettified country estate - you get the trees doing their actual job, not performing for tourists.

Since several of the local camps - Highridge Farm and Woodlands, both under two miles away, and Merlin Farm near Whipsnade Zoo - have it practically on their doorstep, it's worth knowing about if you're basing yourself in the area. Not a destination drive, but a decent way to burn an hour when you're already camping nearby.
