Sailing boats crowd the harbour like white butterflies on blue silk. Cowes lives and breathes yachting - it's what put this Solent-side town on the map and what keeps it ticking year-round. The famous Cowes Week regatta transforms the place each August, but honestly, the quieter months reveal its true character better.

Walk the chain ferry across to East Cowes and you'll understand why so many maritime legends called this stretch of water home. The Royal Yacht Squadron's imposing clubhouse dominates the seafront, while smaller sailing clubs dot the waterside like friendly neighbours. Pop into any of the chandleries lining the high street and you'll find proper nautical kit alongside the usual seaside tat.

Beyond the boats, Cowes offers surprisingly good walking. Head inland and you'll discover Clamerkin Lake tucked away in quiet woodland - a proper contrast to the busy harbour. The network of copses surrounding town, from Three Gates Copse to Bulls Wood, makes for lovely afternoon rambles when you've had enough salt air.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. The Red Jet catamaran from Southampton takes just 25 minutes, or drive onto one of the larger ferries if you're bringing the car. From London, it's a straight run down the M3 to the coast.

Staying at one of the holiday parks nearby, like Thorness Bay just up the coast, gives you the best of both worlds - easy access to Cowes' maritime buzz without the harbour-side accommodation prices. You're perfectly placed for island hopping too, with Newport a short drive inland and the dramatic Needles an hour west.
