Newport

Half the island seems to pass through this county town at some point during their visit. Newport sits right in the centre of the Isle of Wight, making it the perfect staging post for exploring every corner of this compact island. The pedestrianised high street feels properly lived-in rather than touristy - locals actually shop here, which gives it an authentic buzz that some island towns lack.

Robin Hill theme park draws families with its adventure rides and red squirrel trail, while The Falconry Experience offers something completely different for those who fancy watching birds of prey in action. The Isle of Wight Glass Museum tells the story of the island's glassmaking heritage in a converted Victorian church - far more interesting than it sounds. For a dose of Roman history, Combley Roman villa reveals mosaics and foundations from nearly 2,000 years ago.

Arreton Down and St George's Down provide cracking walks with views across the island's rolling chalk downland. The countryside here feels quintessentially English - ancient field patterns, copses like Bunkers Copse, and those distinctive white cliffs visible in the distance. Arreton Barns, just outside town, houses craft shops and cafes in converted farm buildings.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. All island buses pass through Newport, and the town's central location means you're never more than 20 minutes from any coast. The ferry terminals at Cowes and Fishbourne are both a short drive away. From a nearby holiday park, you can easily tackle the island's 26-mile coastline in day trips while having a proper base to return to each evening. Newport gives you the best of both worlds - island life without the isolation.
