About Cowes

Two weeks every August, this yachting capital transforms into the world's most important regatta venue. The rest of the year? A proper sailing town where million-pound yachts bob alongside modest dinghies, and the cobbled high street feels refreshingly normal.

The Solent views are exceptional. Stand at Egypt Point - the island's northernmost tip - and you'll see Portsmouth's naval yards across the water. Ferries churn past constantly, carrying day-trippers and commuters between the island and mainland. It's proper maritime theatre.

Cowes Week aside, the town has a lovely working harbour feel. Red Funnel's chain ferry still clatters between East and West Cowes every few minutes, just as it has for decades. The yacht clubs might look intimidating, but most waterfront pubs welcome landlubbers wanting a pint with a view.

Getting here means crossing the Solent - either by ferry from Portsmouth or Southampton. The 20-minute crossing from Portsmouth Harbour is probably your best bet. Once you're on the island, the rest of the Isle of Wight opens up beautifully: the Needles are a half-hour drive west, while Osborne House and the island's best beaches lie south.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to walk into Cowes for dinner, but positioned to explore the whole island during the day. Several parks dot the northern coast around Thorness Bay, giving you easy access to both the sailing scene and the island's quieter corners.
