St George's Down

Standing at 207 metres, this grassy chalk ridge offers surprisingly far-reaching views across the island's central downs. The walk up from the nearest car parking spot takes about twenty minutes through typical downland - nothing too strenuous, though it's a proper climb that'll get your heart going. Once you reach the top, the panorama stretches from the Solent in the north to the English Channel in the south on clear days.

Walkers and families with older children will get the most from this one. The younger ones might grumble about the uphill slog, but once they're up there, the space to run about and the views usually win them over. It's particularly lovely in late afternoon when the light catches the rolling countryside around Newport.

Being open downland, there's precious little shelter if the weather turns, so check the forecast before setting off. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you want to properly appreciate the views and maybe have a picnic at the top. The surrounding area links well with several local holiday parks - Springfield Oaks and Windmill Campersite are both within easy driving distance, making this a decent day out from your base. Well worth the effort if you fancy stretching your legs and seeing the island from a different perspective.
