Three enormous domes rise from the countryside near Newport, each one housing a different climate zone that'll transport you from tropical rainforest to arid desert in minutes. Inside the first dome, humidity hits you like a wall as you wander past towering palms and exotic birds - the kids will love spotting the colourful parrots chattering overhead. The desert dome offers a stark contrast, with cacti and succulents creating an almost alien landscape that feels surprisingly peaceful.

Families get the most from this place, though anyone with a passing interest in plants and wildlife will find plenty to engage them. The educational bits are well done without being preachy, and there's enough space for little ones to explore without getting under everyone's feet. Budget around two hours to do it properly, though you could easily spend longer if the weather's grim outside.

It's a proper rainy day saviour when you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Appuldurcombe Gardens or Springfield Oaks. The location between Newport and the southern coast makes it an easy stop whether you're heading to the beaches or exploring the island's interior. Well worth combining with a trip to nearby Carisbrooke Castle if you're making a day of it.
