Spur Lake

Fresh water meets salt marsh at this peaceful reserve on the Isle of Wight's northern edge, just a short drive from Cowes. The lake itself sits in a shallow depression behind the coastal defences, creating an unexpectedly wild pocket of Hampshire countryside that feels properly remote despite being so close to town.

Birdwatchers will have the best time here - the mix of habitats draws everything from reed warblers to little egrets, and the lack of footfall means they're not too bothered by visitors. Families might find it a bit too quiet unless the kids are already into nature, though the flat walking makes it accessible for pushchairs.

There's no formal visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared with waterproofs and proper walking boots. The paths can get properly muddy after rain, and the weather off the Solent changes quickly. Allow an hour or two for a decent wander, longer if you're serious about the wildlife.
