Chathill

Trains thunder through this sleepy railway halt twice daily, but Chathill itself barely stirs. It's the sort of Northumberland village where the platform feels bigger than the settlement - a scattering of farms and cottages that most visitors pass without noticing on their way to the coast.

That's their loss. Chathill sits perfectly positioned between two of England's finest stretches: the dramatic Northumberland coastline and the rolling countryside that sweeps inland toward the Cheviot Hills. Mill Burn and Tughall Burn carve gentle valleys through the landscape, creating pockets of woodland and meadow that feel wonderfully remote despite being minutes from the A1.

Alnwick beckons just six miles south, with The Treehouse restaurant at the castle grounds and the excellent Bailiffgate Museum telling the story of this ancient market town. The Alnwick Gallery showcases local artists, while the Northumberland Fusiliers Museum honours the county's military heritage. VIP Brewery produces some cracking local ales worth seeking out.

Coastal gems lie even closer. The golden sands of Beadnell Bay stretch for miles, perfect for long walks and seal-spotting. Northumberland Coast Camp sits right on the shoreline - one of the better-rated parks in the area with proper sea views.

Getting here takes planning. Chathill's train station sees limited service, so driving via the A1 makes most sense. The village itself has little beyond a few working farms, but that's rather the point. You're here for the space, the silence, and easy access to both Alnwick's attractions and some of England's most dramatic coastline.

Staying at one of the nearby parks gives you the best of both worlds - countryside tranquility with beaches and historic towns within easy reach.
