The imposing silhouette of a medieval fortress dominates this Northumberland market town, where the Duke of Northumberland still calls the shots from his ancestral seat. Alnwick Castle might be the star attraction - you'll recognise it as Hogwarts from the Harry Potter films - but there's far more to discover beyond those famous battlements.

Wander the cobbled streets and you'll find The Alnwick Garden, a contemporary masterpiece that's transformed what was once a derelict Victorian plot into something genuinely spectacular. The Poison Garden alone is worth the entrance fee. Proper spooky stuff.

Beyond the town centre, the countryside opens up into classic Border territory. Hulne Priory sits romantically ruined in parkland, while the burns and hills surrounding the area offer excellent walking. Cateran Hill provides cracking views back towards the coast, and if you're feeling adventurous, the Cave of the Nine Year Old has an intriguing backstory that locals love sharing.

Getting here is straightforward enough - the A1 runs close by, and it's about 30 miles north of Newcastle. The nearest railway station is actually at Alnmouth, a few miles east, but buses connect regularly.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around the area makes perfect sense. You're well-placed for day trips to the Northumberland coast - Warkworth Castle is 20 minutes away, and the beaches at Alnmouth and Bamburgh are easily accessible. Plus, after a day exploring castles and gardens, returning to your own pitch beats hunting for accommodation in what can be a surprisingly busy tourist town during summer months.
