Mill Burn

Small and shallow, Mill Burn sits quietly in the Northumberland countryside just inland from Chathill. The water level fluctuates with the seasons, sometimes barely more than a large pond, other times spreading into a proper little lake that reflects the surrounding farmland and scattered trees.

Families with young children will find it manageable - there's no dramatic scenery here, just peaceful water surrounded by gentle fields. The walking is easy on all sides, though the path can get muddy after rain. Don't expect facilities or marked trails; this is very much a case of park up and explore at your own pace.

Birdwatchers might spot the occasional heron or duck, but it's hardly a wildlife spectacle. What Mill Burn does offer is proper tranquillity, especially on weekday mornings when you're likely to have it entirely to yourself. The setting feels genuinely rural, a nice contrast if you're staying at one of the coastal sites like Beadnell Bay or heading to busier spots along the Heritage Coast.

Allow an hour for a gentle stroll around the perimeter, perhaps longer if the children want to skip stones or hunt for interesting bits of driftwood. It's the sort of place that works well as a quiet interlude between more energetic days out at Bamburgh Castle or the Farne Islands.
