Tughall Burn

What looks like a modest stream on the map turns out to be something far more rewarding when you actually walk there. Tughall Burn cuts through proper Northumberland countryside between Chathill and the coast, creating pools deep enough for a proper paddle and banks perfect for an impromptu picnic. The water runs surprisingly clear for this part of the world.

Families with young children will find plenty here to keep everyone happy for a good hour or two. The shallow sections are safe for splashing about, while the deeper pools give older kids something to aim for with their wellies on. Dog walkers love it too - the burn provides a natural cooling station on longer hikes.

Getting there requires a bit of local knowledge as it's not signposted, but that's rather the point. Park considerately near Chathill and follow the footpaths eastward. The walk itself takes about twenty minutes and crosses typical Northumberland farmland before you hear the water.

This works brilliantly as a morning expedition if you're staying at one of the holiday parks near Beadnell Bay or Bamburgh. It's free, naturally, and there's no crowd to contend with. Pack a flask and some sandwiches - you'll want to linger longer than expected. Just mind the nettles if you're venturing off the main path.
