Bala

Mountain peaks surround this Welsh market town like amphitheatre seats, turning every view into a postcard. Bala sits at the northern tip of Wales' largest natural lake, with the Dee flowing through its heart and serious hiking on the doorstep. The town itself is proper Welsh - slate cottages, independent shops, and the kind of community feel where locals still nod hello on the high street.

Llyn Tegid stretches four miles south from the town centre, and it's a cracking spot for watersports when the weather plays ball. The lake's reputation for sailing and kayaking is well earned, though the water stays bracingly cold even in summer. Don't expect Mediterranean temperatures.

Peak baggers will be in their element here. Cadair Benllyn rises directly south of town, while Moel Eglwys and the rest of the Berwyn range offer everything from gentle afternoon walks to proper challenging scrambles. Most locals reckon Y Gesail gives the best views back over the lake, but you'll earn those vistas with a decent climb.

Getting here means following the A494 through some of Wales' most dramatic countryside - it's a bit of a trek from anywhere major, with Dolgellau being your nearest proper town about 18 miles southwest. The narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway runs along the lake shore during summer months, though it's more tourist attraction than transport.

Staying at one of the holiday parks around Bala makes perfect sense for exploring Snowdonia's quieter eastern reaches. You're far enough from the crowds that descend on Betws-y-Coed and Llanberis, but close enough to tackle some seriously good walking. The surrounding peaks might not have household names, but they deliver the goods when it comes to proper Welsh mountain experiences.
