Moel Eglwys

The walk up Moel Eglwys from Bala is a proper hill walk without being a mountain expedition. You're looking at somewhere around 1,600 feet, which sounds less daunting than it actually is once you're sweating through the bracken. The summit gives you a cracking panorama across the Penllyn Valley and into Snowdonia beyond - on a clear day you can make out Cader Idris to the south and the Aran range looming north. It's the kind of view that makes you understand why people actually live in North Wales rather than just holiday here.

This is a walker's hill rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. No cafe, no visitor centre, just decent moorland and a proper climb. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip from Bala, depending on fitness. It's accessible enough for experienced family walkers, though younger kids might find the final push tedious. The terrain can be boggy after rain - which here is regularly - so bring proper boots.

The appeal is straightforward: you get views without needing to tackle Snowdon's crowds or navigate the honeypots further west. If you're staying at Porth Eryri or Tyn Cornel Camping nearby, this makes a solid afternoon out. Snowdonia Glamping is a touch further but still within range for a decent half-day excursion. Come early if you want any chance of solitude, and go on a dry day or you'll regret the muddy descent. Worth the effort, though not life-changing.
