Moel y Gydros

The walk up Moel y Gydros rewards you with proper views across the Bala lake basin - not the highest peak in Gwynedd by miles, but it doesn't feel like a consolation prize either. From Bala town itself, you're looking at a steady climb through moorland and scrub. The path isn't particularly dramatic, but the perspective shifts as you gain height. You'll see Bala Lake spreading out below, the Aran peaks rising to the south, and on a clear day, the ridge of Cader Idris in the distance.

This is one for walkers who want a proper leg-stretch without needing crampons or a head for heights. Families with teenagers will manage it fine; younger kids might find the terrain a bit relentless. Allow two to three hours return, depending on your pace and how much time you spend standing about gawping at the view. There's nothing on the summit itself - no shelter, no café, no crowds - which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on your mood.
